Why we rescue Greyhounds...
First of all, what is Greyhound racing exactly? Greyhound racing is the "sport" of racing Greyhounds, which involves the dogs chasing a lure around a track. It's that simple. However, the dogs lives are far from that. Many suffer from emotion, psychological and physical damage and some even die before ever finding a home where they can live their lives as a normal dog should.
Is Greyhound racing really that bad? Yes. According to The Humane Society, many Greyhounds suffer greatly. They live in crates, pens, or kennels and have very little contact with humans other than transportation or training. Many also suffer from racing injuries which can result in the unnecessary euthanization of these wonderful dogs.
What can I do to help? There is so much you can do! The obvious is to adopt a retired racer and give them a loving home. Another thing you could do is educate people. Tell them about living conditions and the toll racing takes on their health. So many states already ban Greyhound racing, but you can write to your legislators if you live in a state where it is still allowed, and tell them what these dogs go through. They only way to eliminate Greyhound racing is if we do our part to protect them.
